Maths is an essential element of communication. It can be used to describe, to illustrate, to interpret, to predict, to explain and above all to convey meaning.

We aim to:

  • Encourage the use of maths as a tool
  • Appreciate relationships with maths
  • Encourage a fascination with maths
  • Show maths as a process and a creative activity
  • Encourage pupils to work independently and co-operatively
  • Foster in depth studies
  • Make maths an experience from which pupils derive pleasure and enjoyment

The four programmes of study are:

Using and applying: this area deals with the pupil’s ability to use their knowledge to apply to practical tasks, real life problems and within maths itself.

Number: Pupils are taught to read and write numbers, count, add, subtract, multiply and divide. They will be given the opportunity to explore relationships between numbers and develop various methods of computation, including the appropriate use of calculators.

Shape, Space and Measure: Pupils will have opportunities to recognise, understand and use the properties of two and three dimensional shapes as well as pattern.

Handling Data: Pupils will have opportunities to collect information, sort it and interpret it as well as using and understanding probability.
