Literacy is of vital importance in the development of pupils as individuals and as members of society.
We aim to help pupils gain confident expertise in their development as readers and writers, speakers and listeners, by providing opportunities for collaborative interaction and individual reflection within which such growth can occur.
We aim to:
Develop pupil’s understanding of the spoken word and the capacity to express themselves effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities, matching style and response to audience and purpose.
Increase confidence in speaking and listening
Develop the children’s ability to read, understand and respond to all types of writing
Develop a sound vocabulary and accuracy in spelling to help write clearly and meaningfully for different purposes
Know the basic grammatical rules of written English
The three main programmes of study are:
Speaking and listening: pupils are given the opportunity to discuss and explain with each other and staff, to describe objects and events, to tell stories and act out a role.
Reading: pupils are taught to read and enjoy the world of books and begin to understand the importance and use of the written word. They are encouraged to develop their critical thinking, evaluating and understanding what they’ve read.
Writing: Pupils will learn to write for a variety of purposes and begin the structure of the language. Pupils will be taught to form letters correctly and to develop a fluent, cursive style.
